VIDEO: Hip Pain Tips

Travis discusses tips to help relieve your hip pain.

A common question we get from the countless people we help with hip pain, is “What can I do to help my hip recover quicker?”.

Some of you might be getting hip pain when you lie on your side in bed at night, or when you’re getting out of the chair, or when you go for long walks. If you’re getting this type of hip pain, it might be from a condition called Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome or GTPS.

This is a condition that causes pain to the outside of your hip, around to the buttock and down the outside of the leg. GTPS may also be called other names such as Trochanetric Bursitis, Hip Bursitis or Gluteal Tendinopathy, but they’re all the same condition.

Here are a couple of things to avoid if you have hip pain caused by GTPS.

1. To prevent this condition from flaring up one of the most crucial things is how you stand. Get out of the habit of standing with all your weight onto one side and poking your hip out. Many of us might have done this for our entire lives and been fine, but after doing it for a long long time (as in two or three decades!), you can actually start to wear on the outside of the hip and cause pain.

Try to always stand up nice and tall and straight, with your weight evenly distributed between both feet.

2. It’s also really important when suffering this type of pain, to avoid sitting with you legs crossed. At least until your symptoms settle down.

Instead, we simply recommend that you sit with your knees apart with your feet flat on the floor

It’s also important that you sit with your hips a little bit higher than your knees to prevent compression of the hips tendons and bursa. So one thing we recommend to help you with this is a posture wedge.

You can simply wack a posture wedge under your bottom when sitting on the couch, in a chair, or most importantly, in the car.

These are just a couple of tips, to aid a quick recovery from hip pain.
